I Don't Know James Rolfe
PHOTO-SENSITIVITY WARNING: occasional subtle flickering between 19:00 and 24:36
If ever there were a video I've made that required a companion essay or some kind of artist statement to go along with it I suppose it would be this one. It's a strange project that I've been working on for the better part of six months now, a process of trying to disentangle myself from myself. It's about a lot of different things, it's about James Rolfe but also not about him because we have so many versions of him and we can only react to those imperfect projections. He's been doing this for basically 20 years at this point, and out of that arise a million different ways to tell the story: AVGN is deeply inf...

    The humor of trying to interpret Annihilation literally goes even deeper when you read the book after watching the movie. The movie is very different from the book in key ways, but keeps the main theme intact: The perils of the innate human desire for control. The book goes to great length to showcase the failure of the human characters to even know where to start looking for answers in the shimmer. They rail against their lack of understanding in a way that ultimately strips them of their humanity, sending wave after wave of people to their death by assimilation in a similar fashion, a lack of desire to engage with the metaphorical leads to takes on media that are shallow and emotionless, as Dan posits. Their desire for understanding lead them to useless conclusions because they were looking in the wrong spot. from the book, "If I don't have real answers, it s because we still don't know what questions to ask."

    I will start off this comment by saying that this video was well made, the story telling is good and there are important points being raised regarding grifters and political influence. However - you made an, and Im sorry for being a bit harsh here but embarrassing comment with a snarky tone when you said that redditors or "apes" thought that as RobinHood shut off the buy botton they were at the "cusp" of systemic collapse with reality being far more mundane - they were just ensuring to meet liqudity requirements. The latter part is true, they were in fact trying to meet liquidity requirements, but your view on the first part is simply false and shows a lack of research, awareness and plain ignorance. Whatever direction you lean to on this topic, there are several indicators that Gamestop was and still is - posing a systemic threat to both financial markets and the economy overall. Thomas Peterffy, founder of Interactive Broker has an interview with Bloomberg TV where he quite litterarly explains that during this event, on this particular day - the entire banking system was minutes from collapsing in its entirety due to a domino effect where brokers default onto brokers who default onto clearing houses etc. With the absurd amount of shares sold short - far exceeding available float, according to the rules of this very system - brokers would have to go into the market and buy shares at whatever price, that is how our system is set up. (source: ruclips.net/video/Yq4jdShG_PU/видео.html) In another interview with CNBC he says, and I quote - "We have become dangerously close to the collapse of the entire system and the public seems to be completely unaware, including congress and the regulators". (www.cnbc.com/video/2021/02/17/interactive-brokers-thomas-peterffy-on-gamestop-hearing.html?__source=iosappshare%7Ccom.apple.UIKit.activity.CopyToPasteboard) The whole idea of sticking it to the man is great but not realistic, atleast not to the extent that many people may wish for as sticking it to the man entails a longer and more effortful change of the system. Right now though - in this very situation - the fact of the matter is that had the system collapsed as laid out by Thomas Peterffy, it wouldnt be the "man" taking the largest hit - it would be taxpayers and that would result in many broken homes and families, just like it did in 87, 99, 00, 01 and 08. Making jokes about this situation is not something to be proud or snark about. This is a major cause for concern and it warrents a re-design of the system we use - so that families dont end up having to live on the streets because some guy in an invory tower made an unhinged bet selling more shares short than the available float and then accidently blew up the entire system when another group of people figured this out. Had such a situation occured - those who owned Gamestop would have seen ridicoulous profits. Is this morally right or wrong - I dont know. But to some extent there is a necessity to force fundamental change in the system but such a change is more effortful and slow. But instead you chose to make jokes and ridicule the only people raising awareness regarding this issue. Did you feel that those very accessible comments invalidated your claims and so it was best to only tell one side of the story? Dang. Sounds like echochamber to me.

      @notgivingadvicenotgivingad2685 12 часов назад

      @@wizziamthegreat Yes and no, and thats the issue. Thats the point Im making here. The way this system is set-up you dont have an option, financial collapse is inevitable. This truth rings even harder when you start looking into the data and the amount of leverage that institutional investors are dealing with currently. Why do you think bank of Japan rising interest rates by 25 caused its stock market to fall by 25% and SPY by 8%. Its not because a bunch of normal people were trading the spread of YEN/USD. It happend because a bunch of institutional investors borrowed yen and used it to buy stocks on Nikkei / FAANG stocks. When interest rates are raised and its unreasonable to continue the loan - you have to exit the trade. But in doing so, because you’ve got so much money on the table, your exit makes a big stamp in the market. That mark causes other people to worry, so they exit and lose money as well. Its dominos. An increase of 25 basis points should not have that effect in a healthy market. The same goes here. When you sell something you dont own multiple times over and your buddies does the same - you end up in a situation where small changes carry effects of large magnituds. To us, viewing the situation from a far, they wont cause mass financial collapse. But the collapse is inevitable. So What to do you? You continue to print money. You make the money of people who dont understand the situation less valuable over time. From a distance it doesnt look like a collapse, but to anyone with a brain you start to realize that it is a collapse, its a cordinated collapse and normal people are paying for it while their living standards diminishes. Moreover - as you print money you also artificially increase the value of the stock market without any fundamentals backing it. You cannot have infinite growth in a finite system. This is cancer, the litteral definition.

    I enjoyed AVGN when it started off and kept watching episodes regularly.. I think he's pretty much exhausted the genre at this point. I never thought that the standard AVGN episodes were great "cinema" or anything but he did have a few unique episodes that showed great creativity and technical skills. I feel like James aims pretty low when creating content. That may sound like an insult but I think you need to be aware of your limitations, be it talent or budget wise. Where I don't really connect with James is that he's a fan of schlocky cinema and while I enjoyed a lot of what the RLM guys did in the genre James sensibilities and mine almost never meet. James is a fan of the kaufmanesque C-movie style of cinema, there's a guerilla quality to it that always impresses me as a person who has very poor follow-through but I usually comfort myself by dismissing the end product as something I wouldn't be proud of having made. I can agree with the haters. I think I enjoyed the original AVGN run more as a nostalgia-laden validation of my frustration with these games as a kid. I never held James in high regards for his craft. I think he has to scale up if he wants to improve and I don't think he wants to or can at this point. ps. where is bad luck bootsy?

    As much as I enjoyed this video while watching it, something hasn't set right with me ever since. Maybe I have missed something. It rubs me the wrong way that so many video essays are becoming analyses on particular people, especially people who haven't necessarily done anything morally wrong. The criticism here is that some guy who happens to be internet famous is not a professional movie maker and is kinda cocky sometimes? You point out that Rolfe already receives a lot of negative attention from a toxic fan base, yet you make a video that also puts more weird attention on him, for money I presume. It just feels like if I assumed the worst about this video, I would assume it's a cheap attention grab or some weird thing to make you feel better about yourself.

    Fifty Shades is absolutely one of those books where the curve meme works. "Fifty Shades is bad" = stupid guy "Fifty Shades is great actually!" = normal/smarter guy "Fifty Shades is bad actually!" = smart guy Fifty Shades is not bad because it's about BDSM or about a dangerous alpha male. It's bad in the same way most fanfiction is bad. It's written by bad authors. There's a difference between authors feeling ambivalent and characters feeling ambivalent. As long as the author knows what they're doing, you can have inconsistent characters. Characters trying to figure out who they wanna be. That's fine. But it shouldn't feel like the authors are figuring out the characters as they go. The characters should be struggling, not the author. Like, the fact the book can't decide whether Christian's behavior is good or bad ruins the whole book. If his behavior was good within the context of the book, it would be "my mom sold me to one direction". In which case, Anna would be totally into it! That's what makes reading Wattpad so fun. The fact the characters are totally into it and so are you! This sounds stupid, but if rpe happens in a book, but internally the characters consent, then it isn't rpe, because both parties consented! Just not outwardly. But it still isn't rpe, so it doesn't have the damage of rpe. In which case the message would be "if this happened IRL it would be really bad because no clear consent was given. Which is why this is fiction with clear consent (although consent is not given by the characters to each other, they do both consent to it all in their own heads)". It's escapism, fantasy and wish furfillment that would never be possible IRL. If Christian's behavior was bad however, the book would be focused on Anna learning about kink and finding a dom she truely had a healthy and fun relationship with. And she wouldn't stay with Christian. And the message would be "being a sub is fine, but you MUST feel safe at all times." If Anne stayed with Christian however, it would become a horror novel with the message "stay with your abusive partner". Why is it abuse here and not on Wattpad? Because here, Anne isn't consenting to the behavior in her own head! That's the difference! And if Anne didn't know whether the behavior was good or bad, that should be the main theme of the book. But that would mean she would be way more active and her inner monologue should be more focused on how she IS feeling instead of how she OUGHT to feel. So yeah, that's why these books and this movie are so bad. Because they're a horror movie, portrayed as something to be enjoyed. Grey keeps going over Anne's boundaries and she just lets that happen and it's not ever seen as a bad thing by the narrative. Even Wattpad disagrees with this, because Wattpad would argue the movie would be better if in one way or another, Anne was given more agency or shown 'winning arguments' or enjoying this. And we aren't just watching a move of a woman being abused, knowing she's being abused, not liking that, but we as an audience don't see her situation being improved in any sort of way! Then why do milions of women still enjoy this movie if it's so bad? Because they take the parts that they like and ignore the parts that they don't like! Just like we all enjoy Marvel, even though that stuff ain't perfect either! We ignore the misogyny of 1950s morality and hero's and are just here for the fights. And in the same way, women will ignore Anna's passiveness and just imagine Grey as this unfixable animalistic power of masculinity. Instead of a fixable but abusive partner. Oh, and also because fighting as a mommy porn teen girl hivemind against the patriarchy is one of the few ways in which women can actually demand cultural space. So they defend something like 50 Shades even though they themselves don't 100% like it. Because it's always better than reading something made by the male gaze and the male gaze only.

    Ruined school dinners in the UK. Replaced chips with pasta as if carbs+sugary tomato sauce is healthier than a sliced up fried potato.
